    An Experimental Study on Combine Effect of Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and Inlet Air Temperature

    Concern of environmental pollution and energy crisis all over the world have caused the research at

    Nitrous Oxides (NOX for short) are one of the most harmful pollutants produced by automobiles, damaging the ozone layer and the environment. Hence, countries like U.S, Japan and those in the European Union have come up with more stringent emission norms to reduce the impact on the environment (ERN SHER). Serious efforts are being made to reduce the amount of NOX emitted by automobiles, especially those using Diesel Engines. There are many techniques available to reduce NOX, Retardation of Injection timing, Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). SCR is the most effective technique, but it is currently difficult to implement on existing cars and trucks due to the extensive modification that must be done to the exhaust system and the prohibitive cost of the technique (SIMON REIFARTH). Retarding the injection timing reduces engine fuel-efficiency and power output while increasing soot and HC emissions and is hence is not favored (Ming Zheng et al.,). EGR is a cheap and easily implemented option. Many people have studied the effects of intake air dilution using EGR and other gases like N2 by conducting tests in steady-flow combustors, gas turbines and diesel engines. It has been that a strong correlation exists between the stoichiometric-adiabatic flame temperature of the diesel diffusion flame and NOX emissions. This has also been confirmed by many other studies (David Powell, J.,). The purpose of this study was to use this correlation to predict the amount by which EGR will reduce NOX emissions, without actually installing an EGR system and conducting experiments. The technique uses only already available Figure(1), base-engine data like air-fuel ratio, NOX emission, etc. for different speeds and loads and predicts what the reduction in NOX will be for different rates of EGR flow (Jaffar Hussain, K. et al., 2012).

    Layout of the Thesis Chapter one is the introduction of the thesis. It explains the changes needed in building quality in order to minimize the energy demand and its environmental effect. It includes also an introduction to the concept of passive house. Chapter two gives the development in residential building to satisfy passive cooling. The research had focused on the use of appropriate thermal insulation for walls and roofs, the use of sufficient windows as well as the air control to the building. Chapter three explains the theoretical work which includes mathematical relations, tables and figures that used to demonstrate the effective parameters that governorate the amount of cooling loads, thus qualifying these parameters for the experimental study. Chapter four describes the experimental work and presents the measurements and experiences that obtained from enhancement the performance of existing traditional building. In chapter five, the results are discussed and analyzed in details in order to recognize the significant and the contribution of each of building parameters. In chapter six, conclusions of the study and ideas are presented. Some suggestions could be added to the Iraqi building codes and would be benefit to satisfy acceptable indoor quality as well as decrease the consumption of electricity for air-conditioning.

Abstract | ملخص البحث

The effect of putting two inclined partitions inside a rectangular enclosure on natural convection heat transfer rate was studied in this work. The problem was simulated in (ANSYS FLUENT) and solved numerically. The vertical walls were heated differentially to produce a constant Ra of (3x105). The continuity equation, momentum equations, Navier-Stokes and energy equations were used in solution. The results are represented as contours of isotherms and streamlines. The results show that the maximum heat transfer rate occur at (45°) for each partition. It is more than the non-partitioned case by 1.15%. The minimum heat transfer rate occur at (90°) for each partition. It is less than the non-partitioned case by 53%.

In tropical zones, like Iraq, the summer is so hot, usually higher than 45 P o PC, and a special attention has to be paid to prevent extreme weather conditions and reducing the cooling load required for the building. Insulation slows the rate of heat transfer, helping keep homes warmer in winter and cooler in summer. The well-insulated home will satisfy comfortable conditions and consume less energy for heating and cooling. The aim of this study is evaluate the actual contribution of thermal insulation on the cooling load required for Iraqi building. For this purpose, an experimental study has been done to investigate the effect of thermal insulation on the building performance. The results show that average indoor temperature reaches 32 P o PC in May and 34 P o PC in June for sufficient insulation (insulation for all exposed walls and roof). TheP Presults also show that the annual saving in cooling energy could reach up to 65 kWh/mP 2 P, about (30%) compared to the conventional situation.

Abstract | ملخص البحث

In this research, a practical study was carried out on a flat plate solar collector covered by transparent layer faced toward the south and tilted 30o from horizon. The collector is low cost and simple design with 170 litters volume capacity. The collector works according to the natural circulation phoneme where the flow occurs due to the differences in water density. The practical data were collected for Baghdad (33.3o N, 44.3o E) during the period 15 Sep – 31 Dec 2007. The performance of solar collector had evaluated for various conditions and water demands. The obtained data show confident results. It is noticed that the maximum temperature of the water on 15 Dec could reach (43oC) where the inlet temperature was (18oC). Based on that, the using of mentioned collector is reliable and applicable to supply domestic hot water in conjugation with auxiliary heater. Experiments were conducted with a TD212 four cylinder, air cooled, direct injection diesel engine operated over a range of inlet air temperatures. Air flow rate decreased and fuel flow rate increased with an increase in inlet air temperature, which reduced the air-fuel ratio of the engine. Engine efficiency decreased and exhausts gas temperature increased with an increase in inlet air temperature Injector needle lift data also confirmed that the fuel consumption increased with an increase in inlet air temperature. Results also showed that the brake specific HC and CO emissions increased with an increase in inlet air temperature. Average in-cylinder temperature increased with an increase in inlet air temperature, which might be a reason for higher NOx emissions. It also decreased the NOX emissions by 25.55% at the normal state of intake air temperature. The experiments have done in constant speed 2100 rpm and variable torque. We get lower fuel consumption by 15% and increasing in air fuel equivalence ratio by 30% as compared with the normal state. Keywords: Diesel, Combustion, Emissions. Concern of environmental pollution and energy crisis all over the world have caused the research attention on reduction of diesel engine exhaust emissions and saving of energy simultaneously. Better fuel economy and higher power with lower maintenance cost has increased the popularity of diesel engine vehicles. Diesel engines are used for bulk movement of goods, powering stationary/mobile equipment, and to generate electricity more economically than any other device in this size range. As we know that the diesel engine are known for their high NOX formation and Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) is being used widely to reduce and control the oxides of nitrogen (NOX) emission from diesel engines. EGR controls the NOX because it lowers oxygen concentration and flame temperature of the working fluid in the combustion chamber. By using heating intake air it was concluded that decreasing the CO with 12% and the HC with 35% with 30C˚of intake air temperature , However. In this study it was concluded that using EGR with rate 15% and uniform inlet temperature (30 C º) reduced the NOX47.4% .

The improvement of any power plant needs to know what the components that depending on it. In the case of wind plant, it is necessary to know the behavior of the wind. There are several factors affect on the wind state such as velocity, temperature and flow direction. Power of the wind can be extracted by allowing it to blow past moving wings that exert torque or rotor. The wind profiles show that the wind energy conversion device with a certain amount of confidence to extrapolate better wind speed taken at a height more than (10 m) [1]. Solar power is the technology of obtaining usable energy from sun light. The advantages of used renewable energies (solar and wind) are; no pollution, no fuel needed and low costs [2]. It is clear that the using of solar energy at latitudes with higher levels of radiation will improve the performance of wind system and make it possible to cover loads with smaller and less expensive systems. CdS nanostructures are prepared by sol-gel spin coating method using different thiourea concentrations. The thiourea concentration effect for CdS nanostructures deposited on quartz substrate is studied. The CdS nanostructures give important analysis of X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical transmittance using (UV-vis) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, in addition to characterization of atomic force microscopy (AFM). The calculated refractive index and optical dielectric constant have proved a good agreement with experimental and theoretical results.
