An optimized PID parameters for LFC in interconnected power systems using MLSL optimization algorithm

This research presents the load frequency control (LFC) of three interconnected power systems using a MultiLevel Single Linkage algorithm (MLSL) and a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control approach. The conventional PID controller is developed using MLSL optimization algorithm including the LFC loop to minimize the frequency deviation and regulate the power exchange because of the load disturbance changes in area1 and area2. In order to enhance the dynamic performance, the optimal parameters of the PID scheme which optimized by the proposed MLSL algorithm are compared with that one’s obtained by GA algorithm. Integral Square Error (ISE) is considered as an objective function for both algorithms to determine its performance index value for the same interconnected power system. The results show that the performance of the proposed method is more accurate and faster as well in response to the settling time, maximum deviation, and peak time. The combination algorithms set of MLSL_PID_ISE and GA_PID_ISE are coded and simulated using MATLAB.

Photovoltaic Grid-Connected Modeling and Characterization Based on Experimental Results

A grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) system operates under fluctuated weather condition has been modeled and characterized based on specific test bed. A mathematical model of a small-scale PV system has been developed mainly for residential usage, and the potential results have been simulated. The proposed PV model based on three PV parameters, which are the photocurrent, IL, the reverse diode saturation current, Io, the ideality factor of diode, n. Accuracy of the proposed model and its parameters evaluated based on different benchmarks. The results showed that the proposed model fitting the experimental results with high accuracy compare to the other models, as well as the I-V characteristic curve. The results of this study can be considered valuable in terms of the installation of a grid-connected PV system in fluctuated climatic conditions.

Performance evaluation of two PV technologies (c-Si and CIS) for building integrated photovoltaic based on tropical climate condition: A case study in Malaysia

This paper presents two grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems (monocrystalline silicon, c-Si; copper–indium–diselenide; CIS) situated on the rooftop of the solar lab building in the National University of Malaysia, southwestern Malaysia. Various parameters were used to analyze the system performance; including array yield, final yield, capacity factor, and performance ratio. The recordings were noted down under the actual climatic conditions for an entire year. The variables of energy cost and payback period were also considered to calculate the economic feasibility of the system. Variations in the final yield of CIS were as low as 2.98 h/day in July to the highest value of 4.31 h/day in March. The final yield for c-Si power plant ranged from 2.92 h/day in July to 4.14 h/day in March. The calculated capacity factors for CIS and c-Si power plants were 15.6% and 14.4%, respectively, in July as the worst value, and 21.12% and 20.2%, respectively, in March as the best value. In the case of CIS power plant, the performance ratio ranges from 63.8 in July to 84.12 in March, and for c-Si power plant, it ranges from 59.92 in July to 79.14 in March. The energy cost and the payback period of the suggested system were evaluated as 0.045 USD/kWh and 28.44 years, respectively. Finally, this study provides valuable information for those who are interested in PV system installation in the tropical zones.

A REVIEW ON PHOTOVOLTAIC ARRAY BEHAVIOR, CONFIGURATION STRATEGIES AND MODELS UNDER MISMATCH CONDITIONS

A review of the algorithms for pursuing the PV configuration methods within non-uniform conditions is implemented in this study. As has been exposed, there are many methods of distinguishing and PV alignment techniques that strive for mitigating the effect of mismatch conditions (which include the rapid and unbalance changing of the weather conditions like the radiation and temperature) on the PV system. Nonetheless, in this research they are grouped as Series Parallel (SP) interconnection, Total Cross Tied (TCT) interconnection, and finally Bridge Linked (BL) interconnection technique. In contrast to the BL and SP, in the TCT there is a substantial reduction in mismatch losses that occur due to partial shading, beside to it has greater reliability comparable with others interconnections. Furthermore, the focus of this research is also to review modeling the PV arrays under mismatch conditions. A way to decrease the mismatch effect on the PV modules discussed in this study. Also, the challenges might face these reconfiguration methods and PV modeling has been illustrated and presented. Finally, this study can be considered as a valuable indication for those who are interested in PV modeling and reconfiguration.

Maximum Power Prediction for PV System based on P&O Algorithm

This research presents a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller for PV systems is proposed. The developing of the proposed controller is based on conventional P&O algorithm and an Artificial Neural Network. The voltage of the optimum PV system is predicted by using ANN as a controller in order to get the maximum point of power (MPP). The three inputs for the modelled ANN are temperature coefficients, ambient temperature, and solar radiation. While, the output voltage represents the ANN output node. The simulation result shows that ANN much faster than P&Q algorithm in which the output voltage prediction is take 4.91 second as compared to conventional P&O algorithm which is 9.69 second.

Exploring and Assessment of Effect the Fast Changing of the External PV Parameters on the PV Characteristics

Abstract | ملخص البحث

In this paper, the effect of the external parameters on the PV characteristic were studied. These parameters are the radiance and the ambient temperature, which supposed the most two effected parameters on the PV behavior. In addition, the fast changing in these two parameters is also considered and studied. This study focused on all of the I-V characteristic, P-V characteristic and the P-I characteristic. The results extracted from this research showed that the effect of increasing the radiance was positive on the PV behavior for all of the I-V, P-V and the P-I characteristics. However, on the other hand, the effect of increasing the ambient temperature was negative on the PV behavior for all of the I-V, P-V and the P-I characteristics. Therefore, the results presented in this research could be a guideline for those who are interested in PV installation.

An Overview on Microgrid Control Strategies

In response to the ever increasing energy demand, integrating distributed energy resource-based microgrid will be the most promising power system improvement in the near future. Microgrid system implementation provides significant advantages for both electric utility provider and end customer user. This paper performs a comprehensive literature review on the current key issues on control strategies of microgrid islanded mode operation. Brief descriptions are provided for typical microgrid control methods, PQ control, droop control, voltage/frequency control, and current control, which are associated with microgrid mode of operation. This review also covers microgrid control issues such as islanded mode, stability, and unbalanced voltages to provide adequate power quality. In addition, this paper discusses the challenges of microgrid islanded mode issues, such as load sharing, distributed generation losses, and non-linear/unbalanced load. Finally, research conclusions of the important microgrid control requirements for future development are also described.

This paper presents the simulation of regulated DC voltage source. The DC source main supply is solar PV model which produce unstable output voltage. The model is done such that the input parameters are the light and the temperature and the output is the unstable voltage. The output current is important parameter to achieve accurate output voltage, that current is measured and fed to the input of the model to be used for equation evaluation. Voltage regulation is needed to make the generated voltage usable. A simple buck converter with PID controller used to regulate the output voltage. SIMULINK is used to simulate the overall system. Simulation result is given to verify the operation of the model.

Reconfigurable photovoltaic (PV) systems are of great interest with respect to system designers in order to improve the system’s efficiency and operation. This paper proposes an adaptive reconfiguration scheme to reduce the effect of shadows on solar panels. A method to capture the maximum power point of the photovoltaic (PV) array systemwith the help of DC/DC central converter system is presented. The method of connecting the solar adaptive string to the fixed part of the solar photovoltaic (PV) array proposed, which increases the power of the solar PV array according to a model-based algorithm. The model algorithms are implemented in real time. Ideal diode model parameters also proposed for each module in both fixed and adaptive part respectively. The analyses are obtained from the study of the voltage vs. power curve characteristics of the both parts. Finally, the proposed solution is ensuring that the adaptive string has the ability to capture the MPP.

An Improved Maximum Power Point Tracking Controller for PV Systems Using Artificial Neural Network

This paper presents an improved maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller for PV systems. An Artificial Neural Network and the classical P&O algorithm were employed to achieve this objective. MATLAB models for a neural network, PV module, and the classical P&O algorithm are developed. However, the developed MPPT uses the ANN to predict the optimum voltage of the PV system in order to extract the maximum power point (MPP). The developed ANN has a feedback propagation configuration and it has four inputs which are solar radiation, ambient temperature, and the temperature coefficients of Isc and Voc of the modeled PV module. Meanwhile, the optimum voltage of the PV system is the output of the developed ANN. Based on the results; the response of the proposed MPPT controller is faster than the classical P&O algorithm. Moreover, the average tracking efficiency of the developed algorithm was 95.51% as compared to 85.99% of the classical P&O algorithm. Such developed controller increases the conversion efficiency of a PV system.
